A packed week and a contemplative weekend

Urban workshop Mon to Fri
Drove many nuts. It's only the 2nd wk of school!
So exhausted. Luckily the rally rehearsal kept my spirits high.

Friday CG in church. Brought home some important words.
With fear I pray
With doubt I seek
With courage I believe
I believe and therefore speak.

Slept in on Sat. Shiokness. But still quite sleepy.
CAW Day of Recollection at SMOTA.
my gosh, the San Damiano Friary is an enchanting place.
Kudos to WOHA Architects for doing a good job.
The reflective moments are good.
Fr John Paul Tan's talk and sharing are insightful too.
Evening was back to SFA. Welcome party for Fr Michal.
He's such a small boy. So adorable and personable.
Hopefully he'll stay with SFA long enough to make a difference in our parish.

Sun. A good session with Keenan and the rest of my core team members.

Looking forward to a more exciting week though exhausting maybe.

Protest!~~

Saw the recent news on papers. SMRT rolling out a series of new and exciting plans with a Big Bang. Indeed a very big and destructive one. Improving bus services, shortening the waiting time etc is all fine to me BUT NEVER to air-conditioning major bus interchanges. It's just stupid and impractical.

Look at Toa Payoh interchange for instance. Yes, it looks more pristine and high-class. More comfortable? I'm skeptical about it. How long would people wait in the queue to enjoy the air-con in the bus interchange. If pple have to wait for more than 20mins for a bus, tt's really something wrong with the service. So WHY the need to air-con an interchange for such a temporal use by the majority? It's more relevant for the bus-drivers' lounge.

Higher operating cost, high energy consumption, all the waste gases from the engines getting into the air-conditioned enclosed area, Extra devices needed to extract all these gases, higher chances of air-borne disease transmission...the list can go on and on. People are getting more and more detached from the natural environment, losing the sense of sensitivity of nature. Bus-aircon, MRT-aircon, underground passage-aircon, office-aircon, food court-aircon, and the same for the way back home, and reach home, switch on air-con. This is CRAZY!

Bedok Interchange, Jurong East INterchange, all have its sense of place and is well-designed for great natural ventilation though it might pose some problems during heavy rain. But do we always want to be trapped in a fish tank and watching the rain from inside?

Clementi Interchange is gone, together with the fountain which came with the birth of that town. Ang Mo Kio interchange too. I can't even remember how Toa Payoh Interchange used to look like. I liked the present temporary Clementi Interchange, it's quite tropical, cooling and bright!

Can't help it. It's all about "hub". We all have to move on and ahead. But is there a more sensitive way to deal with it and NOT just about destroying and building anew. National Library and our National Theatre, went into history.

First day at school

Jam-packed week before school starts
Research work on Siem Reap town haunts
Dreading for the first day of school
Where my studio has to present

But I shall stick to my new year resolution
To be a good student
And it shall be

But I still had my retail therapy
Sort of burnt a hole in my pocket
But I do need to get those things

Had a good retreat to Ubin
Get in touch with Mother Nature
And a break from the worldly desires

Weekend before school starts
Indeed a special and meaningful one
Which I will treasure and thank God for

14 Jan 07.
Start of my Year 4 Semester II
"Aren't you tired of studying?"
Many questioned
And I do agree
But this is the path I chose
Should do it with joy and commitment

Seeing all the familiar faces
People returning from SEPs
Greeting each other zealously
"Hi"s and "How r u?"s
It's heartwarming

Presentation was smooth and long
Does it sound wrong? Hah.
Attended the Back to Sch party
Just went for the food and "poof", off to church
Lit Com meeting, a fruitful one
Bridging Lights meeting, an exciting one..as always

10.30pm. Put down my bag and finally caught my breath.

New Year's Eve Countdown in Church

A unique first-time experience.
If only the mass was a little later.

Still the youths and adults cheered on
To embrace the coming new year

On the other side of the church
Away from our partying and noise
Gathered foreign workers
Standing in front of the statue of Mary

Kneeling outside the church entrance
Bowing down before the cross
They prayed fervently
Some even in tears

After the countdown party
I went back home early
Waited for the bus for 30mins
Party crowds walking down the usually quiet lanes past midnight
Some looking tired, some empty and lost after all the fun
Worse some making a din, shouting and dancing
Perhaps it's their culture in their homelands.

I often ponder

Life within the church boundaries and
Life outside the church boundaries
Seemed so different
How can we bring God and salvation to them?
To free them from their emptiness in living?

NEW YEAR's DAY.
Rushed down to Mrs Teo's House for my JC class gathering
A handful of pple but a great deal of catch-ups
Everyone, most of the girls are having their own careers

An accountant for almost 3 yrs
Commanding a $6k pay
And a pilot, on his way to flying the F16 in Singapore
Me, still studying and prob coming out slogging as an architectural assistant?
Truth is, that is the plans God has laid down for them and for me.
No point comparing and feeling sorry.
But definitely, it's time for me to plan carefully for my career path.

Rushed home to whipped up a few dishes

My first attempt at those dishes, but definitely not first for cooking
Pretty successful but lotsa room for improvement.
A good dinner to round the day off.

Stuffed Mushrooms with Sausage Cream Cheese

Almond Breaded Chicken breast

Apple Cinnamon Bread Pudding

Reviewing 2007 and Embracing 2008

woots~ Had an awesome sleep last night, woke up at 12noon today.
Cool and grey weather. Just feel like sleeping some more. But have to get up and do something constructive. YEah, only got a chance to finally sit down quietly and review my last yr and set resolutions for this year. Since i've a blog now, shall be discipline and do a proper review and resolution. SOunds cool. Hehe.

*Corrinne May music plays in the backgrd*

2007
. How did it go for me?
*flipping thru my journal*
~ Unnerving Yr3 Sem II, having to tahan the stress of the RIBA I Exams. Got thru finally with a not so impressive project.
~ Din go back Melaka for CNY. 1st time spending 初一 with family at Sentosa (crowded) and Mt Faber.
~ CAW Rally in Feb was a big bang. Quite spiritually charged to see so many youths.
~ Did my first Internship in an architectural firm, DP Architects. Eye opener to see how the largest archi firm operates. Fun experience to work with several other fellow archi mates.
~ MM Concert for FOC 2007. 1st outdoor concert. Sang in the dark. Haha. Another momentous experience.
~ Went to Perth to visit my sec sch classmate. Travelled around the vicinity on my own. Quite a challenging and rewarding experience to travel alone. But at times, it's certainly better to have another partner to share the beauty and joy.
~ Came back and immediately embark on another spiritually enriching PPC trip by the Legion to Kajang, KL. Very packed 4 days but were fed with sumptuous meals to the MAX too.
~ Soon, began my Yr4 Semester One. Given a super dedicated tutor who drives us in our design. Had a interesting semester (though hectic) exploring a new language in my design. Did not yield good grades but it's a good learning experience.
~ Joined the Youth Team in SFA, started by Joachim. An exciting and challenging journey to revive the youth scene in our parish.
~ Term ended with no EXAMS! =). Travelled to Siem Reap, Cambodia, in preparation for next semester design project and also got a chance to see the splendour of the ancient Angkor.
~ Youth Forum, Car Wash Fund Raising, Movie Screening, Xmas BBQ...it's quite encouraging to see how things slowly fall into place. Now left with the YOuth Room tt i'm tasked to design.
~ the passing of Fr David. A great lost for all esp the youths. Was pretty shaken but am now empowered to not let him down but to lead the youth scene well.
~ Christmas Pageant and Midnight Mass. It's hard work paid off though it has its imperfections. A Christmas to remember.
~ A 9-hr AGM with the Youth Team. Positions discerned. Ministry's name chosen (Bridging Lights). Events for 1st quarter of next year planned. Mission spelt out. Dinner at Crystal Jade with heartfelt sharing by everyone.
~ New Year's Eve countdown in church. Super happening. Got to see fireworks too.

2008. My visions.
~ Entering my last semester as an undergraduate. Must make it a good one. Fight all temptations in procrastination, laziness and bad habits and be a good student.
/ It's one of my last chance to do an "A" design project.
/ Hope that I can embark on a good dissertation project in the later half of the year.
/ Hope I can find a good part-time job whilst pursuing my studies.
/ Be able to fulfill my commitments in Youth Ministry, the choir and music ministry in CSS and to do a good job too.
/ Wish that the Easter Play will eventually be realized
/ To increase my knowledge and skills in music
/ To be more forgiving, less selfish, more readily to express and show my love to people around me.
